How to Make Edible Modeling Dough

Most children love to play with modeling clay. They love to twist, turn, squash, smash and bend it to see how many different things they can make. Playing with this dough increases a child's imagination, as well as fine-tunes motor skills. Learn how to make your own edible modeling clay using peanut butter. Variations on the basic recipe allow children to customize their medium and make tasty dough.
    • Combine 2 cups of peanut butter, 6 tablespoons of honey and some cocoa if desired for a Reese's peanut butter cup flavor. Mix well in a bowl until the mixture is smooth and free of lumps.
    • Add enough dry milk to the mixture to reach a consistency like that of bread dough. Add small amounts each time so that you can get the right consistency and not end up with a mixture that is too dry.
    • Allow children to shape and mold their creations. Try rolling out the mixture with a rolling pin and letting the children use cookie cutters to make special shapes.
    • Add edible treats to your shaped dough. These can be nuts, M&Ms or small pieces of dried fruit. Use the edible treats to decorate as desired.
    • Allow children to eat their sculptures.
